There have been a few people who have commented on my use of the the term 'Democracy' in the song "Who Took My Freedom Away?" The usual comment is, "We are a Republic". To them all I gave my thanks. And let me also, give them my assurances that I know that we live in a Republic. However, I use the term "democracy" in the song in its common usage, i.e., the form of government we live under in the United States and most people will understand what I mean. And I know that those of you who have pointed out that we live in a republic, and that it is a darn shame, that most people don't understand that. And that is true, as it is true that most people have not read the text of the "Patriot Act", of which this song is about. My intent was to bring to light, that our form of government, yes a republic, that was formed in the Constitution by "WE THE PEOPLE" is threatened by "The Patriot Act" and that lives were sacrificed for the Freedoms, we as a people hold very dear. What was in my mind when I was writing this song was the final portion of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address:
"That we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain -- that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."
